Finding a great restaurant used to mean scrolling through dozens of reviews, picking up the phone, and hoping someone answers. Yelp just made that whole process much simpler.

The company launched a significantly upgraded AI-powered assistant that handles everything from answering your questions to actually booking the reservation — all inside a single conversation.

Agentic AI Comes to Your Dinner Plans

This updated Yelp Assistant falls into a growing category called agentic AI. That’s just a fancy way of saying AI that doesn’t just talk — it actually does things for you.

Think of it like texting a very capable friend who knows every restaurant in town. You say, “Find me a dog-friendly Italian place with outdoor seating for Saturday night,” and instead of getting a list of links back, they just handle the whole thing.

The assistant taps into Yelp’s enormous collection of user reviews, photos, and business details to understand what you’re looking for. Then it takes action based on what it finds.

What the Yelp Assistant Can Do

The new features cover a surprisingly wide range of tasks beyond just restaurants.

You can reserve a table at any restaurant using Yelp Guest Manager. You can also order takeout through DoorDash or Grubhub without leaving the app. Need a haircut, a dog groomer, or someone to fix your car? The assistant connects you to professionals across hundreds of service categories too.

Booking integrations with platforms like Vagaro, Calendly, and Zocdoc mean you can schedule appointments with doctors, trainers, or salon professionals in the same conversation. Plus, you can request quotes for services without hunting down contact info yourself.

The assistant tab now sits right at the center of the Yelp app, available on both iOS and Android.

Yelp Isn’t Alone in This Race

Several big names are pushing hard into this same territory. Google has been expanding Gemini’s ability to call businesses and book trips on your behalf, while also weaving it deeper into Chrome. OpenAI’s ChatGPT recently showed it can customize a Starbucks order or help plan a Little Caesars pizza party. Even Amazon’s Alexa Plus can now order food through Uber Eats and Grubhub.

Yelp actually launched a basic version of its AI assistant back in 2024. But this update is a much bigger leap. The goal is moving users from “just browsing” to “task completed” without ever breaking the conversation.

“The new Yelp Assistant is our most significant AI product evolution yet as we reconceive Yelp around instant answers and seamless actions,” said Craig Saldanha, Yelp’s chief product officer. “For the first time, consumers can seamlessly move from discovery to action in a single conversation.”

Why This Feels Different From Past AI Features

Most AI features in apps feel like clever search upgrades. You type something in, get better results, and still do all the actual work yourself.

What Yelp is building is different. The assistant closes the gap between finding something and actually getting it done. That last step — making the reservation, placing the order, booking the slot — is usually where people drop off.

So removing that friction isn’t just a convenience feature. It changes how people use the app entirely.

Whether you trust an AI to manage your Saturday night dinner plans is a personal call. But if the assistant handles the tedious parts reliably, most people will probably let it. That’s usually how these things go.
