OpenAI just closed a pricing gap that’s been frustrating developers for months. There’s finally a middle ground between the $20 Plus plan and the $200 Pro plan — and it’s built specifically for people who spend their days coding with AI.
The new ChatGPT Pro tier lands at $100 a month. And if you’ve ever watched your Plus usage limits evaporate halfway through a coding session, this might genuinely change how you work.
Vibe Coding Is Eating Through Tokens Fast
Here’s the thing most people don’t realize about AI coding tools. Writing and planning code uses dramatically more tokens than regular chatting. Tokens are the basic unit of AI generation — think of them as the raw fuel powering every response.
Ask ChatGPT to explain a concept? That’s a few hundred tokens. Ask it to architect, write, and debug a full app feature? You’re burning through thousands. So Plus subscribers doing serious coding work hit their limits surprisingly fast.
That’s why OpenAI’s Codex coding app has become such a hot topic. Usage jumped more than 70% month-over-month this year alone. Plus, Anthropic’s Claude Code went viral at the end of 2025, signaling that AI-assisted coding has genuinely hit mainstream momentum.
What the New $100 Tier Gets You
The new mid-tier Pro plan isn’t a stripped-down version of the premium offering. OpenAI positioned it as a real upgrade with meaningful specs.
Subscribers get Codex usage limits five times higher than the $20 Plus plan. They also get full access to all features from the existing $200-a-month Pro plan, including the ChatGPT Pro model. And unlimited access to Instant and Thinking models is included too.
For context, the $200 plan offers limits 20 times higher than Plus. So the new $100 plan sits right in the middle — not as powerful as the top tier, but far more capable than what Plus subscribers currently get. That math makes it a genuinely useful option for developers who don’t need the full 20x ceiling.
Anthropic Already Does This
Interestingly, OpenAI isn’t pioneering this pricing structure. Anthropic beat them to it.
Claude Max 5x costs $100 a month and delivers five times the capacity of the standard $20 Claude plan. Claude Max 20x runs $200 a month for 20 times the capacity. OpenAI’s new tier mirrors that structure almost exactly — same price points, same multipliers, same logic.
That parallel pricing suggests the industry is converging on a standard model for AI subscription tiers. The $20 entry level, $100 mid-tier, and $200 power-user ceiling is quickly becoming the norm.
Who Should Actually Pay $100 a Month
This plan makes sense for a specific type of user. If you’re building side projects, working through complex codebases, or using AI tools professionally as a developer, the Plus limits probably frustrate you regularly. The jump to $200 felt hard to justify for personal or part-time use.
At $100, the math shifts. Five times the coding capacity at half the price of the top tier is a reasonable trade-off for most developers. You’re not getting the 20x ceiling, but you’re getting room to breathe during longer sessions.
But if you’re mostly using ChatGPT for writing, research, or casual conversations, the Plus plan still makes more sense. The new tier is designed around coding workloads specifically. Paying extra for limits you’ll never hit doesn’t serve anyone.
OpenAI clearly sees where the growth is. Codex usage is surging, vibe coding is pulling in a new wave of non-traditional developers, and the gap between $20 and $200 was always going to get filled eventually. Now it has.
